The observed fragmentation of the Caspian Sea is primarily related to the existing environmental problems, which must be addressed by all Caspian littoral countries. President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev announced this on September 25, addressing the UN General Assembly (GA).

"The Caspian Sea is rapidly becoming shallow. The main reason is not climate change. Joint efforts of the Caspian littoral States are needed to stop an environmental catastrophe with unpredictable consequences. Azerbaijan is also ready to work closely with the UN to solve this problem," RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.
