Former director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) James Comey has been charged with perjury and obstruction of justice. On September 26, ABC News reported this, citing a statement from the U.S. Attorney's office.

"In a statement released by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Virginia, it says that if convicted, Komi faces up to five years in prison," the publication says.

It is clarified that the charges against the former FBI director were brought after the American leader Donald Trump dismissed Eric Siebert, the federal prosecutor for the Eastern District of Virginia, who questioned the need to open a case against Comey.

On August 30, Trump announced that former heads of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) John Brennan and the FBI James Comey could be arrested in connection with spreading false information about Russia's interference in the 2016 American elections.
