- Bulgaria has guaranteed Hungary gas transit from Russia via the Turkish Stream pipeline
Hungary has received guarantees from the Republic of Bulgaria, according to which transit of Russian gas will flow to the territory of Central Europe through the Turkish Stream pipeline. The corresponding statement was made on September 25 by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.
"Bulgaria will remain a reliable transit partner for Hungary, which Bulgaria will not put Hungary in a difficult position," he said in his address, broadcast by M1 TV channel.
According to the minister, the main part of this natural resource enters the state not only through Bulgaria, but also through the territory of Serbia. He stressed that the volume in 2024 amounted to approximately 65% of his country's total consumption — 5.6 billion cubic meters of gas. That is why, as the head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry added, the plan of the European Commission (EC) for the complete abandonment of the European Union (EU) countries from Russian energy sources is "terrible."
The guarantees were given by the head of the Bulgarian Ministry of Energy, Zhecho Stankov, during a telephone conversation initiated by Budapest after the words of Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov about the alleged refusal to transit Russian gas.
Zhelyazkov made this statement on the same day at the UN General Assembly (GA). He noted that by 2028, Bulgaria, as part of the EU, would join the alliance's decision and allegedly completely abandon Russian supplies by the designated period.
