Gastroenterologist named non-obvious symptoms of liver diseases
The liver does not have nerve endings, so its diseases often go unnoticed in the early stages. Nevertheless, there are signs, including non-obvious ones, that may indicate problems with the organ. Valeria Lomova, a gastroenterologist at the SM Clinic Center for Hepatology, told Izvestia about them on September 29.
First, the doctor emphasized that a preventive visit to a hepatologist should take place at least once a year. This is important because most liver pathologies do not give a clear clinical picture for a long time.
"Disturbing, but at first glance unobvious symptoms include discoloration of the palms, the appearance of vascular asterisks, itching of the skin, a tendency to swelling, frequent nosebleeds and bruising with minimal exposure to the skin," Lomova explained.
Weight loss or gain, decreased appetite, constant drowsiness, fast-onset fatigue, nausea, and problems with concentration should also be on the alert. In addition, it is worth paying attention to laboratory parameters: a drop in the level of platelets and hemoglobin in the blood, as well as the detection of urobilinogen in the urine.
"You should also consult a doctor for symptoms such as yellowing of the skin and sclera, liver enlargement on palpation, bitterness in the mouth, darkening of urine or discoloration of feces, pronounced weakness, swelling or confusion," the doctor emphasized.
Lomova named alcohol abuse, fatty liver disease and viral hepatitis as the most common causes of liver damage. Some viral infections, uncontrolled intake of medications, dietary supplements, or herbal preparations also pose a risk.
On September 3, general practitioner Nadezhda Chernyshova gave recommendations on the prevention of type 2 diabetes. She called for periodic blood donation for sugar and glucose, and in case of an increase, to be examined further. The doctor also noted that sports training, activity and proper nutrition will help in prevention.
