Every year, on September 28, Russia celebrates the Day of the Nuclear Industry Worker, a professional holiday for specialists who have dedicated their lives to working with peaceful atom. In 2025, it falls on a Sunday. Izvestia tells about the history of the celebration, as well as shares postcards and congratulations.

Nuclear Industry Worker's Day in 2025 — the history of the holiday

Nuclear Industry Worker's Day is a relatively young holiday. It was established in 2005 by decree of the President of Russia. The date of the celebration was not chosen by chance — on September 28, 1942, the USSR State Defense Committee issued an order "On the organization of work on uranium." At the same time, a special atomic nucleus laboratory was established at the Academy of Sciences, which became the cradle of the Soviet nuclear industry.

In 1943, a group of physicists led by Igor Kurchatov began assembling a model of an atomic reactor to study neutron physics processes. The data obtained during experiments on this device made it possible to create the first domestic reactors. And already in 1946, the production of uranium for defense needs began on the basis of a former cartridge factory in the city of Glazov. Two years later, the country's first industrial plutonium production reactor was put into operation in Ozersk.

One of the outstanding achievements of the Soviet nuclear industry was the first successful nuclear charge test conducted at the Semipalatinsk test site on August 29, 1949, just four years after the creation of a similar weapon in the United States. It demonstrated the power and technological maturity of the Soviet Union. And in 1953, Soviet scientists presented the first thermonuclear bomb.

However, the USSR achieved its most impressive successes in the field of nuclear energy. In 1954, the world's first nuclear power plant (NPP) was launched in Obninsk, which had been operating smoothly for almost 50 years. In 1957, the nuclear icebreaker Lenin set sail, becoming the first vessel of the unique icebreaking fleet, which today is owned only by Russia.

Subsequently, other nuclear power plants were launched on the territory of the USSR: Beloyarsk, Bilibinskaya, Kola, Kurskaya, Balakovskaya and others. Most of them are still working, providing heat and light to millions of people.

With each passing decade, the Russian nuclear industry continued to develop and improve. In 2007, the state-owned Rosatom concern was established, which brought together all the country's nuclear enterprises. This event made it possible to modernize production, develop new technologies and strengthen Russia's position in the global nuclear energy market.

Today, the Russian nuclear industry includes about 450 enterprises and organizations operating in four large scientific and production complexes: nuclear engineering, nuclear fuel cycle, nuclear weapons complex and research institutes. Rosatom also includes the nuclear icebreaking fleet (FSUE Atomflot), which allows our country to occupy a leading position in the development of Arctic routes.

Traditions of the Nuclear Industry Worker's Day on September 28

In honor of the Day of the Nuclear Industry Worker, thematic events are held throughout Russia. On September 28, the results of the industry's work are traditionally summed up, the best specialists are awarded and plans for the future are discussed.

Exhibitions and festivals dedicated to the Russian nuclear industry are being prepared for the holiday in major cities. Participants can learn more about the history of the industry, get acquainted with the latest developments in this field, as well as take part in workshops, quizzes and other educational activities.
