Yana Novikova, a sign language therapist, otoneurologist, ENT, hearing and balance expert, spoke about the effect of colds on a child's hearing.

"During a runny nose, not only the nasal mucosa swells, but also the nasopharynx, where the mouths of the auditory (Eustachian) tubes are located. These tubes connect the middle ear to the nasopharynx, equalizing the pressure. When they swell and overlap, inflammation begins in the middle ear — otitis develops," she explained in an interview with Radio 1.

According to the expert, adenoids play a special role in this process.

"If a child has an enlarged adenoid, he is always at risk for the formation of otitis media," the sign language specialist warned.

Novikova added that enlarged adenoids can physically block the auditory tubes, provoking constant inflammation. Therefore, frequent colds are not a verdict, but they require parents to pay increased attention to the child's full recovery and monitor the condition of the nose and throat in order to prevent the development of otitis media and subsequent hearing problems, she concluded.

On September 14, the first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on Family Protection, Tatyana Butskaya, said that the creation of hospital schools was being systematized in Russia. These are educational institutions for children who have been in hospital for more than 21 days. The relevant bill is already being prepared in the lower house of parliament. According to the deputy, such schools have already been opened in many regions of Russia.

On September 2, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin announced that an AI system for diagnosing ENT diseases, which was developed by Moscow specialists, helps doctors in treatment and is already operating in three medical institutions in a pilot mode, the Moscow City News agency reports.

This system can already diagnose forms of external and acute otitis media, chronic otitis media and laryngeal neoplasms. This development helps in identifying signs of norms or pathologies, while the final decision always remains with the doctor, writes "Moscow 24".
