- The media reported on the agreement between the DRC and Rwanda to begin the implementation of the peace agreement
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Rwanda have agreed to begin implementing security measures under an agreement brokered by the United States. This was reported on September 25 by the Reuters news agency.
"The deal included a commitment to implement the 2024 agreement, which stated that Rwanda would lift defensive measures within 90 days," the publication says.
The agreement, which the countries reached at a meeting in Washington on September 17-18, will be implemented on October 1. The DRC and Rwanda have agreed to take measures against the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) armed group in the Congo and facilitate the withdrawal of Rwandan troops from October 21 to 31.
The members of the joint security coordination mechanism also exchanged intelligence data to establish an understanding of the situation on the ground. Based on this, a step-by-step approach was developed to neutralize the FDLR, as well as the separation of forces and the lifting of defensive measures by Rwanda.
On July 18, Reuters reported that the DRC authorities and representatives of the March 23 Movement (M23) had agreed to sign a declaration of cessation of hostilities. It is specified that the declaration is likely to be signed in Doha on Saturday, July 19. According to the agency, the signing will take place against the background of pressure from the United States.
