Kornienko announced his intention to repeat the stratospheric jump from an airplane
Cosmonaut pilot, Hero of Russia Mikhail Kornienko announced on September 24 that the unique stratospheric jump would be performed once more, but now at the South Pole.
"This is a logical continuation — the South Pole. On the one hand, we have set a record for Russia. On the other hand, we need to do it before someone else does it for us," Kornienko said.
The jump will take place from aboard an IL-76 aircraft, specially repainted for the expedition, Pavel Prolomov, a correspondent for Izvestia, said. The symbolic inscription "Antarctica" is now emblazoned on its fuselage.
Instructor pilot Alexander Lynnik also showed the main components of the equipment: overalls, shoes, gloves and heated glasses, helmet. In addition, Russian pilots are equipped with oxygen and parachute systems. According to Lynnik, the total weight of the ammunition is 36 kg.
"Everything is ours, of domestic design," the pilot emphasized.
On April 12, RuVDS announced that Russian pilots had made the world's first stratospheric jump from an IL-76 aircraft from an altitude of more than 10,000 meters to the North Pole. The record was set by Kornienko, Lynnik and Denis Yefremov, founder of the Stratonautics Aerospace Laboratory.
