The dermatologist spoke about the causes of psoriasis and its treatment methods.
The key manifestations of psoriasis are characteristic plaques with silvery-white scales, itchy and dry skin, as well as the specific phenomenon of bleeding with light scratching. Evgenia Trofimova, a dermatologist and cosmetologist, told Izvestia about this on September 25.
"Psoriasis is characterized by symmetrical rashes on extensor surfaces — elbows, knees, scalp. It is important to differentiate it from seborrheic dermatitis, in which the scales are greasier and yellowish, or from eczema, which is often accompanied by weeping and severe itching," she said.
In difficult cases, additional diagnostics are required, including histological examination of the skin and blood tests to identify inflammatory markers.
The expert noted that genetic predisposition, streptococcal infections, stress, skin injuries, as well as taking certain medications can be provoking factors.
Smoking and alcohol consumption play a special role, which are associated with a more severe course of the disease. Patients with psoriasis often develop concomitant pathologies such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome.
As for treatment, it is currently impossible to completely get rid of psoriasis, but modern therapy allows for long-term remission.
"We use a step—by-step approach, from topical remedies and phototherapy to systemic medications for severe forms. The key task is to control symptoms and prevent complications such as psoriatic arthritis or secondary infections," said Trofimova.
The doctor recommended that patients be regularly monitored by a dermatologist, follow the prescribed treatment regimen and lead a healthy lifestyle to reduce the frequency of exacerbations. Even if the condition improves, therapy should not be interrupted — this can provoke a relapse," the dermatologist warned.
On July 14, Irina Troitskaya, a trichologist and cosmetologist at SM-Cosmetology, said that split ends of hair are a fairly common problem faced by many women. So, the doctor named heat damage to the hair as one of the main reasons — frequent use of a hair dryer, irons and curling irons can lead to overheating of the hair and damage to it.
