A new engine for Gazelle has been launched in Russia
Production of turbodiesel engines for GAZ — Sobol, Gazelle and Valdai commercial vehicles has been localized in Nizhny Novgorod. These models have been equipped with such a motor since 2023, but before that the units were produced in China, Quto reported on September 24.
Nizhny Novgorod Trucks has mastered the production of 2.5-liter engines with a capacity of 150-190 hp. So far, only engine assembly has been localized, but in the future it is planned to achieve an 80 percent localization level. Currently, the level of automation of assembly processes is 85%. The finished engine undergoes a full set of necessary tests.
By the end of 2025, the company will master the production of the camshaft, the note says. By 2027, it is planned to localize the cylinder block, crankshaft, turbocharger, starter, generator and other components.
14 billion rubles have been invested in the project, of which 8.7 billion are concessional loans from the Industrial Development Fund. Earlier, Gorky Automobile Plant abandoned the 2.8-liter Cummins diesel engine, relying on its own G 2.5 unit, which was originally developed by the Chinese company Foton.
On July 10, it became known that commercial vehicles of the Gazelle Next, Gazelle NN and Sobol NN families with rear driving wheels began to be equipped with a stability control system. Prior to this, the front airbags were included in the basic configuration of most modifications of these models.
