Bulgaria will terminate the agreement on the transit of Russian gas in 2026. This was stated on September 24 by the country's Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov at the UN General Assembly.

"As for the call of [US] President Donald Trump, which was made during the General Assembly session, we, as part of the European Union, will join the Union's decisions to suspend contracts for the use or transit of Russian natural gas in the short term – 2026," Zhelyazkov is quoted as saying on the website of the Bulgarian National Radio.

He added that by 2028, gas from Russia should be completely excluded from the Bulgarian energy market.

Earlier, on September 16, the Politico newspaper reported a low probability of Europe's complete abandonment of Russian gas. It was clarified that the EU needs time to adjust and find alternative sources of energy resources.

On September 21, French President Emmanuel Macron said that European countries are making efforts to stop purchasing energy resources from Russia. He noted that EU countries still buy oil and gas from Russia.
