More than 120 people are missing and 34 injured due to flooding in Taiwan
More than 120 people are missing and 34 injured as a result of flooding in eastern Taiwan caused by super typhoon Ragasa. This was reported on September 24 by the central news Agency (CNA) of the island.
According to the agency, as of 8:00 a.m. (3:00 a.m. Moscow time), as a result of the typhoon, 14 people were killed, 34 were injured and 124 are missing. Most of the victims were in Hualien County in eastern Taiwan.
It is noted that the dam lake of the Matai'an River overflowed its banks a day earlier at 14:50 local time (9:50 Moscow time) and flooded the village of Guangfu — it was there that all 14 bodies of the dead were found — as a result of which the water rose to the level of single-storey houses.
The publication clarifies that the highest level of danger has been declared in some areas of Hualien County due to the threat of landslides. If the rains continue, the dam lake may overflow its banks again, and the authorities have evacuated more than 4.8 thousand residents from nearby settlements.
Earlier, on September 22, the National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting (NCHMF) warned of the impending super typhoon Ragasa, which was forecast to bring strong gale-force winds and heavy rains to Vietnam. It was clarified that the typhoon will affect the Chinese provinces of Guangdong and Hainan, the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of China, as well as the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau, after which the disaster will move to the northern regions of Vietnam.
