The calculation of the Buk-M3 air defense system destroyed an air target of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Red Army direction

Military personnel of the Buk-M3 anti-aircraft missile system (SAM) unit of the Center group of forces shot down an airborne aerodynamic target of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) in the Red Army area in the area of a special military operation. This was announced on September 24 by the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.

The ministry clarified that the Russian fighters thereby organized the air cover of the advanced units from the means of air attack. As noted, several modifications of combat vehicles were simultaneously involved in combat duty — each performs its own special task in a single air defense system.

The former, acting as a radar patrol, detect and classify high-speed targets such as airplanes, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), aerial bombs and cruise missiles, data on which is promptly transmitted to other complexes, which subsequently launch and accurately intercept aerial objects.

A special escort vehicle based on the MT-LB, a tracked light armored tractor, is responsible for protecting the anti—aircraft calculations themselves.

The ministry noted that during the entire period of the special operation, such calculations have already destroyed hundreds of enemy air targets, including Bayraktar attack UAVs. As driver Daniil Strokin added, the calculation also often has to work on the destruction of multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) HIMARS and cruise missiles Storm Shadow.

"We work mainly with ballistic targets. <...> We are also working to protect against low-flying targets, "storms" (Storm Shadow. — Ed.). We work intensively, we work every day. The enemy continues to fire, we provide cover," said Nikita Chuplygin, deputy commander of the battery.

Another serviceman, anti-aircraft gunner Alexei Metelin, talking about the activities of his unit, added that he and his colleagues always arrive at the designated place before the calculations in order to clear the area where the air defense systems will work from mines.

On September 23, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported that calculations of 152-millimeter D-20 howitzers from the Ivanovo Airborne Troops (Airborne Forces) of the South group of forces destroyed an accumulation of Ukrainian Armed Forces personnel near the village of Chasyar in the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR).
