Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on September 23 that Budapest supports the efforts of the United States, but cannot change its geographical location.

In this way, he reacted to statements by US President Donald Trump that he would be able to dissuade Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban from giving up Russian fuel.

"We fully support the efforts of the US President to achieve peace. However, we cannot change the reality of our geographical location," Szijjarto wrote on Facebook (owned by Meta, a company whose activities are recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).

In addition, he told RIA Novosti that Trump's demands for Europe to abandon Russian oil and gas are unrealistic. He stressed that the main reason why Hungary cannot do this is that without energy resources from Russia, the country will not be able to provide itself properly.

Szijjarto announced on the same day that Hungary would not abandon Russian energy supplies, despite demands from the United States. He noted that the country can purchase energy resources only where Hungary's infrastructure is present.
