The seizure of the Volga-Dnepr AN-124-100 cargo plane in Toronto has no legal grounds and is a robbery. This was announced on September 23 by Russian Ambassador to Canada Oleg Stepanov.

"Ottawa's actions against the Volga-Dnepr An-124 aircraft are initially illegal. The detention of the aircraft and the subsequent legalistic attempt to confiscate it is a trivial robbery," he said in an interview with TASS.

According to the Ambassador, the Government of Canada has been repeatedly notified of the need to return the rights to their rightful owner, otherwise retaliatory measures will be applied. At the moment, legal proceedings are continuing in the Canadian jurisdiction and the rightful owner is challenging the legality of the seizure of the AN-124 aircraft from him.

Recall that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the transfer of the Russian aircraft to Kiev on June 10, 2023. The decision was the result of his negotiations with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky. Later, on June 15, 2023, the deputy head of the Canadian diplomatic mission in Moscow, Brian Ebel, was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry, he was demarched because of Ottawa's intention to confiscate the An-124 aircraft.
