The keto diet has a positive short-term effect, but with long-term use it can be harmful. On September 23, an endocrinologist, internist, and nutritionist of the highest category, KDC NCC No. 2, told Izvestia about the complex effect of the ketogenic diet on liver health and insulin levels. Academician of B.V. Petrovsky" by Evgeny Ivanov.

The specialist explained that a keto diet that practically eliminates sugars and carbohydrates can contribute to a sharp decrease in liver fat, which is especially important for patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

In addition, the fight against insulin resistance is a key positive effect, since it is this condition that often becomes a driver of the development of liver pathologies. However, the long-term prospects raise questions: animal studies have revealed the risks of developing fatty hepatosis with prolonged adherence to a diet with an extremely high fat content.

A critical factor, according to the doctor, is the quality of the fats consumed. A diet rich in healthy fats from avocados, olive oil, and oily fish can have an anti-inflammatory effect, while excess saturated fats can negatively affect the lipid profile. As for the level of insulin, its decrease against the background of a low-carb diet is a natural process and can be a therapeutic effect for people with type II diabetes.

The expert also warned about long-term risks, including potential problems with the cardiovascular system due to changes in the lipid profile, nutritional deficiencies, kidney strain, and temporary side effects during the adjustment period, known as "keto flu."

Ivanova emphasizes that the ketogenic diet is a powerful tool for influencing metabolism, but it is not balanced for continuous use. It can be useful for short-term use under medical supervision, but is contraindicated in a number of diseases and requires mandatory consultation with a doctor before starting.

On September 3, general practitioner Nadezhda Chernyshova gave recommendations on the prevention of type 2 diabetes. She called for periodic blood donation for sugar and glucose, and in case of an increase, to be examined further. The doctor also noted that sports training, activity and proper nutrition will help in prevention.
