On September 23, US President Donald Trump accused the UN of waste during a speech at the 80th session of the General Assembly. The speech was broadcast on the UN website.

The US President shared the story of how many years ago he participated in a tender for the reconstruction of the UN building complex, but the project turned out to be a failure.

"I said then that I would do everything for $500 million, and with a guarantee. But they decided to go the other way, which turned out to be much more expensive and at the same time gave a much worse result. As a result, they had huge cost overruns and spent from 2 to 4 billion dollars. The project turned out to be so corrupt that Congress even invited me to testify about the colossal waste of money," Trump said, speaking from the podium.

The American leader also stressed that he considers the United Nations unable to fully realize its potential, noting that "empty words do not solve wars," and the organization must prove its effectiveness in practice.

"The two things I got from the UN are a broken escalator and a broken teleprompter. Thank you very much," the American leader said at the end of his speech.

Earlier in this speech, Trump accused the UN of inaction in resolving global conflicts. According to him, the organization does not support his peacekeeping efforts. The American leader also added that the UN is currently completely failing to realize its potential.
