Heel pain can have different character and intensity, indicating both simple overwork and serious pathologies. Alexander Umnov, a lecturer at the Department of Surgery at the Medical Faculty of the State University of Education, told Izvestia on September 25 about the possible causes of pain and ways to alleviate the condition.

The doctor attributed overstrain of the ligamentous apparatus and muscles, which occurs during long walks or standing work for many hours, to common non-pathological causes.

"Wearing tight shoes or high-heeled shoes also increases pressure on the heel area, disrupts blood circulation and leads to inflammation and micro-injuries. In overweight people, the pain may be more pronounced due to increased stress on the feet," said Umnov.

Among the pathological causes, the expert identified traumatic injuries such as dislocations, fractures and sprains, as well as inflammatory processes such as bursitis, arthritis and osteoarthritis.

Umnov paid special attention to diabetes mellitus, which can provoke chronic inflammation of the ligaments and the formation of painful heel spurs. Flat feet, especially after prolonged exercise, also often leads to a painful attack. The most dangerous conditions accompanied by severe pain are purulent bone diseases, such as osteomyelitis, as well as neuropathies and nerve compression.

For effective treatment, it is necessary to accurately determine the cause of the discomfort. In cases of serious diseases such as osteomyelitis or tuberculosis, surgery and a course of antibacterial therapy may be required.

For non-purulent inflammations, such as osteoarthritis or exacerbation of arthritis, topical treatment with ointments based on nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or injections for pain relief and relief of inflammation often helps. Physiotherapy procedures, such as magnetic therapy, can bring additional relief, and massage is effective for pain caused by leg fatigue.

The specialist emphasizes that self—diagnosis and self-medication are unacceptable - if persistent heel pain occurs, you should consult a doctor.

On August 19, Oles Tikhonov, an orthopedic traumatologist and head of the Department of Traumatology and Orthopedics at the MedSwiss network of medical centers, said that for joint health, foods such as mackerel, almonds, strawberries, olive oil and broccoli should be in the diet. According to him, salmon, sardines, and herring are among the main sources of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, which have anti-inflammatory effects.
