The State Duma allowed the translation of all documents into digital format
The State Duma is already considering initiatives to expand the use of electronic documents, including digital student ID cards, passports and driver's licenses. Anton Tkachev, first deputy head of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technologies and Communications, told Izvestia on September 23.
"It should be understood that, although such documents can be used for identification, according to current legislation, at the request of an authorized employee, it may still be necessary to present an official paper document. This is a step—by-step process," the MP said.
Tkachev emphasized that the main advantage of digital documents is their convenience and increased confidentiality. For example, when displaying a QR code, personal information such as date of birth is not disclosed, which helps protect information from unwanted eyes.
As for protecting citizens' personal information when using a QR code instead of a passport, the expert added that the use of localized hardware and Russian software reduces the risks of hacking.
"The introduction of digital documents is a positive and progressive experience that will become a convenient and secure feature for every Russian citizen," concluded Tkachev.
On September 22, the press service of the Ministry of Finance of the Russian Federation reported that in stores, cinemas and museums in the near future it will be possible to confirm your identity using a QR code. In the future, it is planned to expand the use of QR codes, including financial market organizations and MFCs for obtaining public services.
