European scientists have estimated that the hot summer of 2024 led to the deaths of more than 60,000 people in Europe. The study was published in the scientific journal Nature on September 22.

"In this paper, we quantified the heat—related mortality rates in the summer of 2022-2024. <...> We counted 62.7 thousand deaths related to hot weather in 2024," the preface to the study says.

As noted in the publication, this is more than in 2023, when just over 50 thousand people died, but less than in 2022, which claimed the lives of almost 68 thousand people.

On July 9, the Reuters news agency reported the deaths of about 2.3 thousand people in 12 European cities due to the heat wave. According to scientists from Imperial College London and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, 1.5 thousand deaths were a direct result of climate change, which increased the intensity of heat.
