"Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is aware that it is the church that is the real opposition. It has a strict hierarchy, a recognized leader, and a clear vision of the desired future, all of which sets it apart from the sluggish and divided political opponents of the ruling team. Globally, Pashinyan faces a simple choice: either he removes the Catholicos and retains power, or in some future the church will remove him," he explains.

The expert added that secular authorities are unlikely to be able to overcome the clergy. According to Atayev, there are people behind Catholicos Garegin II who are ready to go to the end, while Pashinyan has much fewer of them.

Earlier, the head of the Armenian government announced that in the next month and a half there will be a "culmination of actions" against Catholicos Garegin II. According to him, some kind of large-scale mass action will be held at the Etchmiadzin monastery by the end of October, and that "there will be no compromise."

In June, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov expressed concern over the attacks on the Armenian Apostolic Church in Armenia. He stressed that Moscow is interested in stopping such actions and resolving the situation as soon as possible based on respect for the rights of believers.
