- The Russian Academy of Sciences predicted an increase in tension in the region after Trump's demand to return the Bags
Omar Nessar, a researcher at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, noted in an interview with Izvestia that if the words of American President Donald Trump about the need to transfer control of Bagram airbase in Afghanistan to the United States are taken seriously and it comes to practical steps, then the actions of the United States can create a rather tense situation in the region.
"Trump's demands in this form are completely unacceptable to the current Afghan authorities, because if they make concessions to the United States on this issue, they will lose the fragile internal legitimacy they currently have," the political scientist believes.
According to the expert, the United States is unlikely to undertake large-scale military operations, much less deploy troops.
"But they may not significantly complicate the situation of the Taliban by large-scale actions. The Americans can launch several drone strikes on a number of sensitive points for the current Afghan authorities in Kandahar and Kabul, about which they clearly have information, and thereby complicate the situation and provoke a number of very complex processes," the expert is sure.
The analyst added that such actions could lead to a rapprochement between the Taliban and non-Afghan groups.
"And this, in turn, can lead to a destabilization of the situation in the entire Central Asian region," Nessar concluded.
The WSJ newspaper reported on September 19 that the Trump administration and representatives of the Afghan Taliban movement were negotiating over the American military presence at Bagram Air Base. On the part of the United States, Adam Beler, the special presidential envoy for hostage affairs, is participating in them.
In response, the Afghan authorities called on Washington not to repeat "past unsuccessful approaches" and to show rationality in their actions, without threatening to use force against the territorial integrity of another country. Kabul recalled the Doha agreement between the Taliban and the United States. According to the document, Washington pledged "not to use or threaten the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of Afghanistan, as well as not to interfere in its internal affairs."
On September 21, the American leader announced that he expected Afghanistan to transfer the Bagram airbase to US control. He noted that Washington wants to return her as soon as possible, literally immediately. In addition, the American leader threatened consequences if Afghanistan refused to comply with the demands of the United States.
