In the summer season of 2025, sales of train tickets in Russia increased by 25%, while flight bookings decreased by 17%. This trend is explained by a number of factors, including the convenience of baggage transportation. Alexander Tokmakov, head of Yandex Travel transport services, told Izvestia on September 25 what difficulties arise most often and how to avoid misunderstandings even before departure.

According to him, each passenger can take with them a carry-on bag weighing up to 36 kg for free, the size of which should not exceed 180 cm in the sum of the three sides. For passengers of compartment cars, the norm is higher — up to 50 kg. In addition, you can transport a baby carriage, skis, snowboards and musical instruments for free.

"Tents, sleeping bags and backpacks can be carried free of charge if the dimensions comply with the rules of hand luggage described above. Problems arise when the equipment is bulky or wet after a hike. In this case, it will have to be put in a luggage compartment or a carriage," Tokmakov said.

According to him, separate rules are provided for large items and sports equipment, such as bicycles and skis. Baggage exceeding the specified parameters should be checked into the luggage compartment. The cost of transporting bulky luggage depends on the distance and ranges from 230 to 1.7 thousand rubles, depending on the route.

It is also important to remember that the transportation of animals and pets also has its own rules: for small pets, carrying is enough, and for large dogs, a separate place in the carriage and a veterinary passport are required.

"Money and securities are not accepted in the luggage compartment. It is also forbidden to put items in baggage and hand luggage that may damage or pollute the carriage or pose a danger — explosive, toxic, flammable and strongly smelling substances. Lighters, perfumes and cosmetics in aerosol packaging, household chemicals in consumer containers and tourist gas cylinders with a gas mass of up to 500 g are allowed to be transported," said the head of transport services.

Tokmakov drew attention to the fact that special attention should be paid to the preparation of the apartment before departure. He stressed the importance of safe luggage placement, especially for active pets and bulky items. It is recommended to pack things in advance, and for fragile items, choose containers to avoid damage.
