Ilsur Metshin re-elected Mayor of Kazan

Ilsur Metshin, the mayor of Kazan, has been re-elected to the post of mayor. The decision was made on Monday, September 22, at a session of the Kazan City Duma.

Ilsur Metshin defined his program for the next five years as follows: "Greater Kazan offers great opportunities for everyone." Among other things, it is planned to synchronize the development programs of Kazan and suburban areas within the framework of the Kazan agglomeration; to reform the housing and communal services system; to improve the quality of the urban environment.

The meeting also discussed the results that Kazan has achieved over the past five years under the leadership of Metshin. In particular, during this time, the city's economy has doubled, 85% of city roads have been brought to a standard state, over 4 thousand apartment buildings, and more than 2 thousand yards have been landscaped. The construction of the Voznesensky Tract and the reconstruction of the Gorky Highway have been completed, the BOSC has been modernized with the complete recycling of sewage residues, and renovation and landscaping of former industrial zones is currently underway.

The life expectancy of Kazan residents has increased by 8.6 years in 20 years. At the same time, during the same period, the city's population grew by 208.6 thousand people to 1.329 million inhabitants, making the capital of Tatarstan the fifth most populous city in Russia.

In addition, according to the results of the first quarter of this year, Kazan ranks first in terms of construction and catering turnover, and second in terms of investment. In 2024, the city took the third place in the ranking of the Urban Environment Quality Index.

Ilsur Metshin has been mayor of Kazan since 2005. Over the years, Metshin has initiated large-scale urban improvement programs. Special attention is also paid to international activity: Metshin is the president of the United Nations Advisory Committee on Local Self—Government (UNACLA), and since 2024 he has been the founder of the Association of Cities and Municipalities of the BRICS+ countries.
