The veterinarian pointed out ways for dogs to adapt to loneliness without stress.
Dogs are very social animals by nature and perceive the family as a pack. Therefore, the sudden silence and the absence of the host are alarming. The human task is to create a safe and comfortable environment for a pet, in which loneliness will not become a source of stress. Victoria Romanovskaya, a veterinarian and expert at the Triol brand, told Izvestia on September 26 how to help animals adapt to loneliness without experiencing stress.
She noted that not all dogs perceive separation in the same way. Active and energetic breeds can experience loneliness worse, which sometimes leads to furniture damage or barking. On the contrary, more independent pets can safely endure separation, however, comfortable conditions must be created for them. It is important to observe the behavior of the animal and choose an individual approach.
"At the same time, it is important to properly prepare the apartment before leaving. Dangerous items — wires, small items, household chemicals — must be removed. It is better to limit access to rooms where a dog can harm itself or make a mess. Aviaries or cages can be an excellent solution for very active animals prone to vandalism. The main thing is to teach the pet to them gradually, showing that this is not a punishment, but a comfortable and safe shelter," Romanovskaya said.
In order for the dog not to get bored, the veterinarian advises using interactive toys and puzzles with treats. These things entertain the pet, help him to release energy and develop intelligence. Chewing treats can also be a good way to relieve tension and satisfy the natural need to nibble.
Special attention should be paid to walking your pet before leaving: a tired dog is less likely to look for something to do. In addition, Romanovskaya recommends creating a special ritual before leaving, for example, giving the dog a treat — this will help connect the moment of separation with something pleasant.
Vladimir Golubev, President of the Russian Cynological Federation, told Izvestia on September 17 that many dog breeders are unable to read the early signs of their pet's discontent and notice the problem only at the stage of growling or attacking.
