Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom have officially recognized the statehood of Palestine. This was announced on September 21 by the governments of the three countries.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stressed that the recognition of Palestine was part of a coordinated international effort by Canberra, Ottawa and London. According to him, the relevant actions are aimed at creating a new impetus for a two-state solution, which will include a cease-fire in Gaza and the release of hostages captured by the Hamas movement on October 7, 2023.

The Canadian government clarified that recognizing Palestinian statehood does not legitimize terrorism, nor does it jeopardize support for Israel.

"Although Canada has no illusions that this recognition is a panacea, it is firmly consistent with the principles of self—determination and fundamental human rights," the Canadian authorities said in a statement.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, in turn, clarified that the country is acting to preserve the possibility of peace and a two-state solution. He also stressed that the Hamas movement should not play any role in the governance of Palestine.

Earlier in the day, the Palestinian Hamas movement called the recognition of the country's statehood an important step to confirm citizens to their land. According to them, this measure should be accompanied by practical ones that will lead to an end to the conflict in the Gaza Strip and will counter settlement plans in the West Bank.
