Recognition of the statehood of Palestine is an important step for the confirmation of the country's citizens to their land. This was announced on September 21 by the Palestinian Hamas movement.

"This recognition is an important step towards confirming the right of our Palestinian people to their land and holy sites, as well as to establish their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital," the BBC quoted the statement as saying.

Hamas stresses that this step must be accompanied by practical measures that will lead to an end to the conflict in the Gaza Strip and will counter settlement plans in the West Bank.

In addition, the movement called on the international community and the UN to cease all forms of cooperation with Israel.

Earlier that day, Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom recognized the statehood of Palestine. According to Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, the cooperative efforts of London, Canberra and Ottawa are aimed at creating a new impetus for a two-state solution, which will include a cease-fire in Gaza and the release of hostages captured by Hamas on October 7, 2023.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in turn, ruled out the creation of a state of Palestine west of the Jordan River. According to him, countries that have recognized statehood "give a huge reward to terrorism."
