European countries are making efforts to cut off Russian energy supplies and stop depending on Russian energy resources. This was announced on September 21 by French President Emmanuel Macron.

Journalists asked the French leader to respond to US President Donald Trump's statement that Europeans still continue to buy oil and gas from Russia.

"It's true, and we're fixing it. <...> We have to finish the job," Macron said in an interview with the program "Face the Nation" on the American television channel CBS News.

The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said in an interview with the Belgian newspaper Le Soir on the same day that the European Union does not need energy independence to ensure its security in this area. At the same time, von der Leyen pointed to the acceleration of the abandonment of Russian energy resources. She added that the import of oil, liquefied natural gas (LNG) and hydrogen continues to be part of the EU's energy mix, and the decision to purchase American products under the deal with the union remains with European companies.

Prior to that, on September 15, Politico newspaper, citing sources, indicated that Trump's pressure was unlikely to lead to the EU countries completely abandoning Russian raw materials before 2027.
