- FT learned about the negative reaction of EU residents to the Trump-Von der Leyen deal
Residents of the European Union countries reacted extremely negatively to the trade deal between European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and US President Donald Trump. This was reported on September 21 by the Financial Times newspaper.
According to a survey by the French newspaper Le Grand Continent, three quarters of Europeans believe that the agreement is "beneficial exclusively to the United States," the same number are convinced that von der Leyen "poorly defended the interests of Europe."
"Almost half called Trump an enemy of Europe, only 10% — a friend," the article emphasizes.
According to the survey, "three quarters of Europeans are dissatisfied with the EU's position," and the majority "would vote for von der Leyen's resignation." At the same time, 39% of respondents said that the EU should take an "oppositional position" in relation to Washington's actions, half were in favor of compromise, and only 11% were in favor of agreement.
Analysts note that public discontent in Europe may escalate into a tougher course towards the United States, including measures in the field of digital policy and reducing dependence on American technology.
On September 16, Politico reported that the European Parliament (EP) will discuss and then vote on two votes of no confidence in the head of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen at the plenary session from October 6 to October 9. Two political groups, including the far-right Patriots for Europe and Leftists, submitted separate votes of no confidence in von der Leyen on September 10.
The United States and the European Union agreed on a trade deal on July 27. The agreement will allow the EU to avoid 30% duties that could be imposed by Washington. As a result of the deal, the European Union remains with tariffs of 15% on most of its exports, including cars. US President Donald Trump stressed that such an agreement "satisfies both sides."
