Moscow is monitoring the situation surrounding the detention in Bulgaria of Russian citizen and businessman Igor Grechushkin, whose ship is linked to the explosion in the port of Beirut in August 2020. This was reported on September 21 in RIA Novosti with reference to the Russian Foreign Ministry.

It is clarified that the Russian Embassy in Sofia has not yet received an official notification on this issue from the Bulgarian competent authorities.

"Grechushkin himself or his authorized representatives have not contacted the Russian diplomatic mission so far," the Foreign Ministry added.

It is also noted that, if necessary, the staff of the consular department of the embassy is ready to assist the Russian.

On September 16, it became known that Grechushkin had been detained in Bulgaria. It was reported that the man was put on the wanted list at the request of the Lebanese judicial authorities. The Russian is currently in custody for 40 days.

The explosion in the port of Beirut occurred on August 4, 2020. As a result, 137 people were killed, about 5,000 were injured, and several dozen are missing. About 300 thousand more people lost their homes. The explosion damaged and destroyed more than a hundred buildings. The damage was estimated at several billion dollars.

The next day, it became known that the owner of the Rhosus ship that exploded and was detained in Beirut was Russian Igor Grechushkin. After the ship was detained in Beirut, he was forced to pay a penalty, and then initiated bankruptcy proceedings. It is unknown who became the owner of the vessel after Grechushkin.
