Reuters has learned of Maduro's offer to hold talks with Trump's special envoy.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has offered to hold direct talks with US President Donald Trump's special envoy Richard Grenell on the situation with the strikes by American forces on ships allegedly involved in drug trafficking. This was reported on September 20 by the Reuters news agency with reference to the corresponding letter.
In a letter to Trump, Maduro rejected U.S. claims that Venezuela plays a major role in drug trafficking, noting that only 5% of drugs produced in Colombia are shipped through Venezuela. According to him, 70% of them were neutralized and destroyed by the Venezuelan authorities," the publication says.
Maduro noted that relations between the two countries should be "historical and peaceful." According to him, a direct dialogue with Grenell will help "overcome the media hype and fake news."
In the letter, the president also recalled that Trump's special envoy had previously helped resolve the situation with previous accusations that Venezuela allegedly refused to accept illegal migrants deported from the United States.
"So far, this channel has functioned flawlessly," he stressed.
Earlier in the day, Trump said Venezuela should accept all of its citizens deported from the United States, threatening serious consequences if it refused.
On September 17, Maduro said that the United States was threatening Venezuela with war, trying to seize its natural resources and install a puppet government. According to him, the United States violates international laws, treaties and the Charter of the United Nations (UN). He added that in order to neutralize this threat, it is necessary to unite the people of Venezuela.
On September 2, it became known that the US military had destroyed a ship allegedly carrying drugs from Venezuela. It was noted that the Pentagon had to study the details of the incident. Later, Trump said that 11 people died as a result of the strike on the ship.
