- Axios learned about Netanyahu's request to the United States to put pressure on Egypt over the military in Sinai
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, during a meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, asked for pressure on Egypt over military personnel in the Sinai Peninsula. This was reported on September 20 by the Axios portal, citing sources.
"One Israeli official said that Israel has decided to contact the administration of [US President Donald] Trump asked for intervention after direct negotiations with the Egyptians failed," the article says.
It is clarified that during the meeting with Rubio, Netanyahu presented a list of actions in the Sinai Peninsula, which he called significant violations by Egypt of the 1979 peace agreement with Israel, guaranteed by the United States.
At the same time, two Israeli officials stressed that the Egyptians are creating a military infrastructure, some of which can be used for offensive purposes, in areas where the treaty allows the deployment of only light weapons. Officials also reported on Egypt's expansion of airstrips at air bases on the peninsula and the construction of underground structures. According to Israeli intelligence, they may be used to store missiles.
Earlier, on September 17, Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi called Israel an enemy for the first time in 46 years at the Arab-Islamic summit in Doha. According to him, the situation must change so that the Israeli side understands that any Arab state stretches from the ocean to the Persian Gulf.
