Tarasova called Petrosyan's grandiose victory in the selection for the 2026 Olympics
The victory of Russian figure skater Adelia Petrosyan during the qualifying tournament in Beijing for the 2026 Winter Olympics is a grandiose one for figure skating. This was announced on September 20 by Honored Coach of the USSR Tatiana Tarasova.
"This is a great real victory for Adelia and her team, which made it possible for our country to participate in single skating at the Olympic Games. This is a great victory!" RIA Novosti quoted her as saying.
During the qualifying show, Petrosyan did not show the elements of ultra-c in her program - the quadruple jumps and the three-and-a-half-turn axel. However, the athlete will certainly demonstrate all her skills at the Olympics, Tarasova emphasized.
Petrosyan scored 209.63 points in the sum of the two programs (the short program on September 19 brought her 68.72 points). Thus, the two-time champion of the Russian Federation qualified for the Olympics, which will be held in Italy on February 6-22 in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo.
On September 19, the president of the International Skating Union (ISU), Chae Yel Kim, explained the admission of Russian figure skaters in a neutral status by saying that the organization did not want to discriminate against Russians based on their passports.
On August 20, the ISU published on its official website the list of participants in the qualifying tournament for figure skaters for the 2026 Winter Olympics. Among the Russian figure skaters, Petrosyan and Pyotr Gumennik were admitted to the qualifying tournament. Alina Gorbacheva and Vladislav Dikidzhi are going to the selection as substitutes. Sports and dance couples were not allowed to participate in the competition. The skaters will compete in a neutral status. Humennik is also in the lead after the short program at the Olympic qualification tournament in Beijing.
