In Odessa, activists and a group of military demanded the resignation of the mayor
A rally was held in Odessa with the participation of activists and a group of military men demanding the removal of the mayor of the city, Gennady Trukhanov, in connection with the spread of allegedly "pro-Russian sentiments." As the Ukrainian 24th TV channel reported on September 20, the crowd demanded the introduction of a military administration of the city.
"Residents of Odessa are asking [President of Ukraine Vladimir] Zelensky wants to create a military administration in the city. The corresponding veche was held on September 20. <...> They consider this a necessary decision due to the unsatisfactory work of the current mayor Gennady Trukhanov," the publication says.
Other claims against Trukhanov include the participation of the mayor in corruption schemes that hinder the mobilization of city residents, as well as "systemic inactivity of local governments."
On July 17, Verkhovna Rada deputy Artem Dmytruk reported that the Ukrainian authorities intend to send about 100 employees of the territorial recruitment center to Odessa to strengthen violent mobilization in the city.
The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, responding to a question from Izvestia on July 2, noted that Trukhanov's statements about Odessa incite ethnic hatred and show disdain for Russian-speaking residents of Odessa. Russian Russians protested that Odessa was "not a Russian city," Trukhanov said at a rally in defense of Russian culture. The diplomat stressed that the current Odessa authorities are abandoning the memory of the people who founded the city and put their heart and soul into it. She also recalled that the city hall condoned the demolition of the monument to Catherine II.
