Political commentator Matthew Dowd, who was fired from MSNBC because of his comments about the murder of Republican Charlie Kirk, said that his former employer agreed with the misinterpretation of his statements, but fired him anyway. This was reported on September 20 by The Guardian newspaper.

"I said, 'I think you're making a huge mistake.' <...> I said: "You know, and I know that's not what I meant at all. You know, it was misinterpreted," Dowd said in a podcast by American TV presenter Katie Couric.

According to him, representatives of the TV channel agreed that the meaning of his statements had been misinterpreted. At the same time, as the observer clarified, they said that it did not matter, since the decision to dismiss had already been made.

Immediately after Kirk's murder, Dowd suggested on MSNBC that the far-right activist's rhetoric could have contributed to the shooting that killed him. MSNBC publicly condemned Dowd's words, calling them "inappropriate, insensitive and unacceptable."

Earlier, on September 14, The Guardian newspaper reported that Americans who left offensive comments about Kirk's murder were being fired from their jobs in the United States. It is noted that the head of the Pentagon, Pete Hegseth, instructed his staff to "find and identify the military personnel and any persons associated with the department who ridiculed or, apparently, justified the murder of Charlie Kirk."

Kirk died on September 10 after an assassination attempt during his speech at the University of Utah. He played a key role in the victory of the American President Donald Trump in the 2024 elections.

Tyler Robinson, accused of murder, appeared in court for the first time via video link on September 17. It was noted that he was wearing special clothes to prevent possible suicide attempts.
