Zelensky suggested that Poland and Romania shoot down drones over Ukraine together
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has proposed to Poland and Romania to take a joint decision on the destruction of drones that fly through the territory of Ukraine and may threaten neighboring states. This was reported by the Ukrinform news agency on September 20.
"I think it's fair to talk about a joint solution. <...> We have an air defense system — we shoot down everything that flies at us and flies at Poland. And Poland also shoots down everything that flies at them and what flies at us," he said.
According to Zelensky, we are talking about certain western regions of Ukraine, where it is possible to effectively interact with Polish air defenses. He also stressed that such an approach could also apply to Romania.
"We don't count on others," the Ukrainian leader concluded.
Pavel Lisitsky, the editor-in-chief of Do Rzeczy, said yesterday that calls to shoot down Russian drones over Ukraine from Polish territory were an attempt to involve Poland in a conflict with Russia. He recalled that by entering the conflict in this way, Poland would automatically lose the protection of Article 5 of the NATO Charter, since the participating countries are only obliged to protect the attacked state, which is a member of the North Atlantic Alliance.
Prior to that, on September 14, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski proposed discussing the introduction of a no-fly zone over Ukraine. At the same time, the diplomat said that such a possibility was discussed a year ago with European leaders at the time when former US President Joe Biden was in office.
