Lithuanian Defense Minister Shakalene hinted at the destruction of Russian aircraft
On September 19, Lithuanian Defense Minister Dovile Shakalene hinted at the possible destruction of Russian fighter jets by NATO forces. She made such a statement, commenting on the alleged penetration of Russian Aerospace Forces aircraft into Estonian airspace.
"Three Russian fighter jets over Tallinn are another solid proof that the Vostochny Sentinel initiative is long overdue. The northeastern border of NATO is being checked for a reason. We must act seriously. Turkey set an example 10 years ago. There is something to think about," she wrote on the social network X (ex. Twitter).
In 2015, the Turkish Air Force shot down a Russian Su-24 over the territory of Syria, after which the Russian Federation imposed a number of economic restrictions on Ankara. At the end of June 2016, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan apologized for the incident.
Earlier in the day, the Estonian Foreign Ministry accused Russia of allegedly having three MiG-31 fighter jets invade the country's airspace. In turn, the head of diplomacy of the European Union (EU), Kaya Kallas, stated that she was in contact with Tallinn. On the same day, Estonia requested consultations from NATO member countries in connection with the incident. At the same time, the Russian Defense Ministry denied the violation of Estonian airspace by Russian aircraft.
Later, US President Donald Trump said that he did not like the incident. According to the American leader, he will soon be given a briefing on the situation.
