The United States is seeking to include the issue of oil purchases from Russia in trade negotiations with India. This was reported by Bloomberg on September 20, citing sources.

"The United States sought to include India's oil purchases from Russia in the negotiations on the trade deal, even though the refineries of the South Asian country are increasing these imports to meet growing domestic demand," the publication says.

According to the agency, the American delegation led by Assistant U.S. Trade Representative Brendan Lynch raised this issue during a meeting with Indian negotiators on Tuesday, September 16. Bloomberg sources stressed that this request was unusual, as relations with third countries are usually not included in bilateral trade negotiations.

In addition, New Delhi continues to insist on the abolition of an additional 25% levy on purchases of Russian energy resources, although a solution to this issue, according to Bloomberg, is not expected in the near future.

The day before, Bloomberg also reported that Indian companies had not abandoned oil purchases from Russia, despite the resumption of trade negotiations between New Delhi and Washington. Anonymous sources told the newspaper that oil purchases are expected to remain active in the coming months, but their volumes may be lower than the record levels of recent years.

U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Latnick said on September 11 that the United States could conclude a trade deal with India after it refuses to purchase Russian oil.

On September 4, American leader Donald Trump abandoned a trade agreement with India over Russian oil. The source said that India had offered a significant reduction in duties on American goods, but this did not help to conclude a deal.
