Domestic wineries are refocusing on the production of sparkling wines of the most "dry" categories – brut and extra-brut. The traditionally popular semi-sweet wine continues to fall. Pink sparkling wines are also in fashion, the production of which is growing faster than white ones. On September 20, Roskachestvo analysts told Izvestia about this, having studied data on sparkling wine production in Russia for 6 months of this year.

According to Roskachestvo, the share of domestic sparkling wines in natural retail sales increased by 5% in the first half of this year compared to the same period in 2024, amounting to 72%. Sales growth in liters of Russian wine, despite the overall decline in the market, amounted to more than 2%, against the background of a significant drop in sales of sparkling wines from Italy, France, and Portugal.

Domestic producers are responding to the growing demand for domestic sparkling wine by increasing the volume of sparkling wine production in the most sought-after categories and building stocks for New Year's Eve sales. In the first six months of this year, according to the USAIS, more than 72 million liters of sparkling wines of all types were produced, which is 18% higher than in the same period last year. The growth continued in July and August. In just eight months, over 104 million liters of Russian wine were produced.

"Sparkling wines are a fairly diverse category, which is classified in Law 468 by color, sugar, carbon dioxide pressure in the bottle, aging, and type of production. One of the key indicators for the buyer is the sugar content in the wine. More than 90% of all sparkling wine consumers pay attention to this parameter. According to our analysts, the outstripping growth of the most "dry" categories of sparkling wine has been going on for several years. Breweries and extra-breweries accounted for 47% of the production volume, confidently outstripping semi-sweet wines, which produced about 42% of the total volume. Compared to last year, the production of breweries and extra-breweries increased by 31%, while semi—sweet wines increased by only 7%," explained Olesya Latysheva, director of the Department of Research and Promotion of domestic wine products, head of the Wine Guide of Russia.

Roskachestvo experts also note an increase in demand for semi-dry sparkling wines, which were produced in the first half of the year by 16% more than in the same period in 2024.

Another trend in the sparkling wine sector that analysts have noticed is the growing share of pink sparkling wine production. For the first time, such wines occupied more than 20% of the output.

"Pink sparkling wines are growing faster,— Latysheva noted.

This year, 32% more wine was produced in this style than in the same period a year earlier. Traditional white sparkling wines gained about 16%. It is also worth noting the growth in a small but important category of red sparkling wines for Russian winemaking. Such wines, among others, are produced on the Don from Russian autochthonous varieties. The category grew in production by 16%. In particular, the demand for sweet red wines is growing.

The largest regions of sparkling wine production in the first half of 2025 were the Krasnodar Territory (56%), the Republic of Dagestan (10.5%), St. Petersburg (9%), the Republic of Crimea (5.5%), Sevastopol (5.3%), the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania (4.8%), the Moscow Region (3.7%) and the Leningrad Region (2.8%).

Roskachestvo experts also note an increase in the number of sparkling wine producers. This year, 76 enterprises have already worked with such products, among which there are more and more farms, a year earlier there were about 60 such wineries.

At the same time, sparkling wine production in Russia is quite consolidated. Six producers occupy 60% of the Russian sparkling wine market. The top three are Abrau-Durso CJSC (Krasnodar Territory), Kuban-Vino LLC (Krasnodar Territory) and Sparkling Wines CJSC (St. Petersburg).

Every year, Roskachestvo conducts a study of Russian sparkling wines within the framework of the Wine Guide of Russia project, publishing separately the results of tasting assessments for wines produced by the classical method and the acratophoric (Charm method). This year, the publication of the rating of the best Russian sparkling wines will traditionally be released before the New Year.

In May, it became known about the record volume of alcohol production in eight years. It was specified that in 2024, the volume of alcoholic beverages amounted to 10.1 billion liters, which is 9.5% more than in 2023. It was specified that the production of wines increased by 14%, grape wines — by 8.6%, sparkling wines — by 24.7%, and liqueur wines — by almost 30%.
