A judge dismissed Trump's $15 billion lawsuit against The New York Times.
U.S. District Judge Stephen Merriday dismissed US President Donald Trump's $15 billion libel and defamation lawsuit against The New York Times, ruling that it did not contain a brief complaint that could be considered by the court. This was reported on September 19 by USA Today.
"As every lawyer knows (or is supposed to know), a complaint is not a public platform for insults and invectives, not a protected platform for expressing anger at an opponent. The complaint is not a megaphone for public relations, not a podium for an impassioned speech at a political rally, and not the functional equivalent of a Speakers' Corner in Hyde Park," the newspaper quotes an excerpt from the court ruling.
The judge also noted that the lawsuit does not have legal grounds for a judicial claim, and the attempt to sue this publication itself is "an attempt to suppress independent journalism."
Trump's lawsuit, which was filed on September 15, mentions a number of articles in The New York Times, including an editorial before the 2024 presidential election stating that the politician was unsuitable for the post of head of state, as well as a 2024 book published by Penguin Publishing, titled "Lucky Loser: How Donald Trump squandered his father's fortune and created the illusion of success." The original lawsuit consisted of 85 pages.
