Dmitry Patrushev spoke about the elimination of environmental damage in the Arctic
The accumulated environmental damage is being actively eliminated in the Arctic. In 2024, more than 6 thousand hectares of territories in the Arctic regions of the Russian Federation were reclaimed. This was stated on September 19 by Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Patrushev at the presentation of the Arctic Dossier report.
"In the Arctic zone, the elimination of accumulated environmental damage facilities is consistently underway. In particular, this is the clearing of territories occupied by landfills and the restoration of disturbed lands. In 2024 alone, reclamation in general affected more than 6 thousand hectares of land, primarily in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug and Yakutia. The national project "Environmental well-being" in the Arctic zone includes activities related to the formation of a modern waste management system, conservation of forests, restoration of water bodies and reduction of hazardous emissions into the atmosphere. A total of 12 billion rubles are expected to be allocated for these purposes. Here are some specific examples. For example, rivers in the Krasnoyarsk Territory, the Arkhangelsk Region and the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District should be cleared in the coming years. In addition, in 2025 alone, reforestation activities in the Arctic regions will cover almost half a million hectares," he said.
Patrushev noted that on behalf of Russian President Vladimir Putin, a fund to support environmental initiatives had been established. This year, 15% of all projects that have received grants are aimed at preserving and studying the natural environment in the Arctic zone.
It is specified that the monitoring network of the Russian Hydrometeorological Service is being upgraded to develop environmental monitoring in the Arctic zone. This year, the Russian government has allocated about 1 billion rubles for these purposes.
The scientific expeditionary fleet is also being updated, and the Ivan Frolov research vessel, one of the largest facilities in its field, is expected to be commissioned by 2028. It will also perform tasks in the Arctic zone. Also this year, the government supported the construction of another vessel designed directly for work in the Arctic, the Artur Chilingarov.
The Deputy Prime Minister added that specially protected natural territories at the federal level have been created to protect the ecosystems of the Arctic zone. Their area is about 40 million hectares, which is the largest contribution among all the Arctic states. They help preserve the biodiversity of the Arctic, which is about 20 thousand species of living organisms.
According to Patrushev, Russia will continue to move towards environmental conservation in all its territories. He noted that the Russian Federation consistently adheres to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and advocates strengthening dialogue in the field of environmental management.
Earlier, on July 22, Nikolai Patrushev, Assistant to the President of Russia, Chairman of the Russian Maritime Board, said that in order to develop the maritime tourism market, it was necessary to expand the list of Russian ports in the Arctic and the Far East, where foreign cruise ships could follow. The assistant to the head of state called the sphere of sea cruises one of the most growing segments of the tourist market.
