The orthodontist named the rules for choosing the hardness of the toothbrush
Choosing the appropriate brush hardness is an essential detail in daily oral care. Irina Butorina, an orthodontist and ambassador of the EUROKAPPA Academy, told Izvestia on September 21 how to choose the right toothbrush.
According to the expert, a soft brush is considered the most versatile and safest option. It effectively removes plaque without injuring the gums or damaging the enamel. Medium-hard brushes are suitable only in some cases and are most often used as prescribed by a doctor, since if the cleaning technique is incorrect, they can cause micro-damage and gum recession.
Many people believe that hard brushes brush their teeth better, as they create a feeling of more intense friction and "creaking" on the enamel. However, this is a misconception. In fact, such brushes are too aggressive: they thin the enamel, cause gum recession and increase tooth sensitivity. Therefore, dentists practically do not recommend them for regular use.
Butorina emphasized that special attention should be paid to dental care during orthodontic treatment. If the patient is wearing braces, the toothbrush should clean not only the surfaces of the teeth, but also the space around the locks and arches. To do this, it is recommended to use a brush at a 45-degree angle and make careful circular movements. A monopuckle brush also comes to the rescue: due to its compact shape, it allows you to thoroughly clean hard-to-reach areas and interdental spaces.
During treatment with aligners, hygiene control is somewhat simpler: mouthguards are removed during meals and allow you to fully clean your teeth. However, it is also important to follow the care regime here — to thoroughly brush your teeth and the mouthguards themselves in order to avoid bacterial growth.
"Dental health depends not only on which brush you choose. It is important to clean them properly: give it at least two minutes in the morning and evening, move the brush gently and in circular movements, use a thread or additional brushes. This is the only way the care will be really effective," the doctor concluded.
Earlier, Roman Wolberg, a dental surgeon, implantologist and periodontist, named the most common mistakes that lead to dental problems. According to the doctor, one of the main enemies of oral health is haste. Daily dental care should take at least three minutes per set.
