Trump refused military aid to Taiwan in the amount of more than $400 million.
US President Donald Trump refused to approve the allocation of more than $400 million in military aid to Taiwan this summer in order to focus on a trade deal and a possible summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. This was reported on September 19 by The Washington Post (WP).
"This decision marks a reversal in US policy towards Taiwan and could boost future arms sales," experts said, commenting on Trump's refusal.
According to former Pentagon official Dan Blumenthal, "now would be a completely inappropriate time for the United States to take its foot off the gas pedal," referring to Taiwan's strategic support.
The sources also clarify that the aid package was supposed to include ammunition and autonomous drones, "more lethal" than previous rounds of supplies. At the same time, Taiwan is preparing its own arms purchases, which could amount to billions of dollars.
Earlier, on August 7, Evgeny Shatov, a partner at Capital Lab, spoke about the consequences of the introduction of US duties on goods from more than 60 countries. He noted that the duties will have the greatest impact on car exports from Germany and Canada. It will also affect the supply of electronics from Taiwan and South Korea.
