A tsunami threat has been declared in the Kuril Islands after an earthquake in the Pacific Ocean, the main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Sakhalin Region reported on September 19.

The seismic event was recorded 411 km northeast of Severo-Kurilsk at a depth of 36 km, with a magnitude of 7.6. Waves of up to 0.2 m are expected to approach the residential islands of Iturup, Kunashir and Shikotan. The situation is under the control of the duty shift of the regional department.

"The urban development zone is located in a tsunami—safe zone, please remain calm and do not panic," Alexander Ovsyannikov, the head of Severo-Kurilsk, wrote on Telegram.

Earlier, on September 18, the main directorate (GU) of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations in the Kamchatka Territory warned about the occurrence of waves at Cape Lopatka with a height of up to 1.5 m. Later, an earthquake of magnitude 7.2 occurred in Kamchatka. As noted by the governor of the Kamchatka Territory, Vladimir Solodov, no damage was recorded as a result of the earthquake.
