Ecuador's ex-president Moreno accused of corruption
Former Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno is accused of accepting bribes for a dam construction contract. This was reported by the APNews news agency on September 16.
The Ecuadorian prosecutor's office has charged Moreno with corruption for accepting bribes from the Chinese construction company Sinohydro for the construction of one of the country's largest hydroelectric power plants.
In presenting the indictment, Attorney General Wilson Toainga pointed to Moreno and 12 other people who were identified as accomplices.
"According to the prosecutor's office's investigation, in the framework of the so—called Sinohydro case, bribes in the amount of about $76 million were distributed to secure a construction concession," the agency reported.
Earlier, on September 5, it was reported that the son of the former head of Mordovia and the Samara region, Alexei Merkushkin, was sentenced to seven years in a high-security penal colony on September 5 for fraud, large-scale bribery and abuse of office.
