An increased risk of heart attack may depend on the penetration of bacteria into the bloodstream and due to poor oral hygiene. About it on September 18, "Gazeta.Ru" said Saida Abdurakhmanova, a periodontist at the Dantistoff network of scientific dentists.

"Patients with periodontitis have a 34% higher risk of developing cardiovascular diseases than patients with healthy gums," the expert said.

Abdurakhmanova explained that the reason is several factors: the effect of pathogens on the walls of blood vessels, an increase in the level of inflammatory markers and the entry of bacteria into the bloodstream.

"Inflammatory markers accumulate in the blood — special substances that reflect tissue damage. They are involved in the development of atherosclerosis, which contributes to vasoconstriction and impaired blood supply. If the vessels of the heart are affected, then this is a direct path to a heart attack," the periodontist shared.

The doctor said that germs can enter the body during dental procedures, even during regular brushing. They travel through the bloodstream to atherosclerotic plaques and settle on them. The formation of blood clots will be facilitated by the bacteria that are in the vessels. They interact directly with platelets, the cells responsible for blood clotting.

The expert said that compliance with oral hygiene, professional dental cleaning and timely treatment of periodontitis will contribute to reducing risks.

Earlier in the day, Roman Wolberg, a dental surgeon, implantologist and periodontist, named the most common mistakes that lead to dental problems. According to the doctor, one of the main enemies of oral health is haste. Daily dental care should take at least three minutes per set.
