Solar eclipse in September 2025: when to observe, will it be visible in Russia
At the end of September, a rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon will occur — a partial solar eclipse. It will occur on the 21st on the eve of the autumnal equinox and will complete the corridor of eclipses that began at the beginning of the month. Izvestia tells you when and how to observe the solar eclipse in the fall of 2025 and whether it will be visible in Russia.
Solar eclipse of September 21, 2025
During a solar eclipse, the Moon partially or completely covers the Sun for a short time. This happens when the Earth's satellite is positioned between our planet and the sun, casting a shadow on the surface of the Earth.
There are four types of eclipses in total: total, partial, hybrid and annular, each of which is unique in its own way. During a partial eclipse, the sun's disk is not completely closed and often has the shape of a crescent moon. Solar eclipses occur only during the new moon, an average of two to five times a year.
According to astronomers, the September eclipse will be one of the most spectacular in the last decade. The moon will cover up to 80% of the sun's disk, which does not happen very often. The event will occur just before the autumnal equinox, when the length of day and night are almost equal. Because of this, the phenomenon was called the "Equinox Eclipse."
When and where to observe a solar eclipse
The maximum phase of the eclipse will occur around 22:41 Moscow time. The total duration will be more than four hours — from 20:29 to 00:53 Moscow time. During this period, the Sun will look like a thin crescent in the sky. The eclipse itself will be the deepest in the last few years.
The event cannot be observed everywhere, but only on that part of the Earth on which the Moon's shadow falls. In September 2025, only residents of the Southern Hemisphere will see the solar eclipse. The best views will be in the South Pacific Ocean, between New Zealand and Antarctica. For observers from Russia, the phenomenon will remain unnoticed.
However, you can watch the eclipse online. To do this, you will need to install the Eclipse Guide or Sky Tonight app.
How to watch a solar eclipse
To observe the solar eclipse, it is important to choose a site with an open horizon, away from the glare of the city. You must first find out the weather forecast, as clouds and rain may interfere with the observation.
When observing the sun, even during an eclipse, you need to use special glasses or solar filters that are mounted on a telescope lens or binoculars. They must be certified and comply with the international safety standard.
Ordinary sunglasses and homemade devices will not work, because they are not able to protect against dangerous solar radiation, which can damage the retina of the eyes. For the same reason, it is not recommended to look at the sun through the screen of a camera or mobile phone.
The impact of a solar eclipse on humans
Astrologers believe that eclipses can have a negative impact, especially on weather-sensitive people and those with chronic illnesses. Sleep disorders, fatigue, mood swings, and feelings of anxiety and apathy may occur.
Some folk signs related to the solar eclipse warn against making large purchases, making acquaintances, planning long-distance trips and operations during this period. It is not recommended to start something new and make serious decisions.
From a scientific point of view, a solar eclipse does not have a direct impact on the human psyche or health. Therefore, during periods of eclipses, psychologists and doctors advise you to soberly assess your condition and not give in to panic thoughts.
