Russian Daria Chudnaya from Moscow became the bronze medalist of the VIII Competition of Young Innovators of the BRICS countries, which ended in Brazil as part of the jubilee X Forum of Young Scientists. The contestant presented a project on a system for objective monitoring of major greenhouse gases from outer space using artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. It is proposed that the developed platform will allow an ordinary person to track environmental data in real time.

"For us, participation in the forum and the competition provides an opportunity to show the country's capabilities in achieving technological sovereignty. A full innovation cycle has been formed in Russia, from fundamental scientific and technological research to the development of high–tech products. In addition, holding such events is an important tool for forming international partnerships. Our participants get to know colleagues, find like—minded people, and create joint projects," said Ksenia Trinchenko, Director of the Department of International Cooperation at the Russian Ministry of Education and Science.

The head of the department also shared plans for the development of a new social and humanitarian cooperation track through the association. Thus, the first Forum on Social Sciences and Humanities of the BRICS countries will be held in Sochi from November 26 to 28, 2025 on the federal territory of Sirius within the framework of the V Congress of Young Scientists. At the same time, the first meeting of the BRICS international Specialized Working Group will be held.

"The plans are very ambitious. First of all, the development of a unified approach to the assessment of scientific productivity. Today, global scientometry is largely tied to Western databases and indicators. This does not always reflect the real picture and makes our countries dependent on other people's methods. We believe that BRICS, which unites more than half of the world's population, can and should offer its own criteria for scientific effectiveness," Trinchenko told Izvestia.

BRICS has everything it needs to create an alternative. The association has world-class scientists, powerful research schools, and the need for an objective assessment system. In June, two online expert meetings were held to discuss the creation of a joint publishing house, the development of new analytical tools, and the introduction of indicators of academic mobility and publication activity.

"In Sochi, we plan to consolidate these developments and move on to practical implementation. When we manage to build a unified database and scientometrics system, it will be a real breakthrough. Russia sees this not just as a technical project, but as a step towards strengthening the academic sovereignty of the BRICS countries and forming a multipolar scientific space," Trinchenko concluded.

The BRICS Young Scientists Forum was established in Brazil exactly 10 years ago. Since 2016, it has been held annually by the Chair country. Its main goal is to create a platform for dialogue and preparation of joint projects. In 2018, South Africa initiated a Competition for Young Innovators focused on the introduction of advanced technologies and the development of socially significant solutions. Russia has traditionally shown high results.

Last December, the closing ceremony of the IX BRICS Forum of Young Scientists took place on the sidelines of the IV Congress of Young Scientists at Sirius University of Science and Technology. The event, which concluded Russia's BRICS presidency in the field of science, technology and innovation, gathered the largest number of participants in the entire history of the event — 180 delegates. The BRICS Young Scientists Forum became the starting point for the creation of international scientific consortia and the emergence of new initiatives aimed at ensuring the technological development of states and the sustainability of national economies.
