The decision of the European Commission (EC) to suspend financial support for Israel is a significant political signal. This was stated to Izvestia on September 18 by political analyst Dmitry Brije.

"This decision demonstrates that for the first time in a long time, the European Union is ready to link the development of relations with Israel with respect for human rights and international law. The economic effect of this measure will be limited in the short term, as direct transfers do not play a decisive role for the Israeli economy, but the political and historical weight of the decision is very high," the source said.

He also added that the EC's decision could be the first warning about a possible revision of agreements and trade preferences between the EU and Israel. In addition, it will strengthen the position of the Palestinian side, which is guided by international law and recognition of its statehood.

"There will be more and more countries that will abandon relations with Israel, and this will further isolate Tel Aviv. In the future, European Union countries may go further from restricting imports of products from settlements and strengthening labeling to discussing an arms embargo. In parallel, they can step up support for humanitarian initiatives and channels of dialogue at the civil society level," the political scientist emphasized.

As for the peace process, the expert said, it depends on whether this step by the EU becomes a single act or part of a broader strategy. If the suspension of support turns out to be only a symbolic gesture, its influence will quickly dry up. However, if this serves as the beginning of a long-term policy linking cooperation with Israel with real steps towards ending violence and resuming negotiations, then the EU will be able to resume its role as a key mediator in the Middle East region.

On September 17, European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maros Sefcovic made a proposal to suspend EC trade relations between the EU and Israel at a briefing in Brussels. According to him, the EC regrets the need to take this step, however, despite this, it considers it appropriate and proportionate, given the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. Later, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced the suspension of EU financial support for Israel.
