Normal menstruation lasts from 4 to 8 days with a cycle duration of 24-38 days. On September 19, Dmitry Gusev, a gynecologist, endocrinologist, reproductologist, PhD, founder of the DOKMED PRO educational project, told Izvestia which symptoms of menstrual cycle disorders require mandatory treatment by a specialist.

"When we talk about menstrual disorders, it is important to understand that there are two broad categories of problems. The first problem is a violation of the regularity of the menstrual cycle. The second is the problem of abnormal uterine bleeding," Gusev said.

The specialist listed the main causes of irregular menstruation: thyroid dysfunction, hyperprolactinemia, premature ovarian insufficiency, functional hypothalamic amenorrhea due to stress or excessive exertion, polycystic ovary syndrome, adrenal problems and intrauterine synechiae.

The doctor paid special attention to abnormal uterine bleeding, which is divided into heavy menstruation and intermenstrual spotting.

"Heavy menstruation is a situation where the patient is worried about blood clots, a change of personal hygiene products more than once every two hours, or nighttime leaks," Gusev explained.

The most common causes of such conditions are endometrial hyperplasia, uterine fibroids, and adenomyosis.

Intermenstrual bleeding can be caused by endometrial polyps, chronic endometritis, the effects of sexual infections, PCOS anovulation, or have undiagnosable causes.

The expert clearly identified situations requiring specialist treatment: cycle reduction of less than 24 days, delays of more than 38 days, less than eight menstruations per year, prolonged menstruation, more than nine days, and heavy bleeding.

On August 18, Irina Vasilyeva, head of the Mammology clinic at the European Medical Center (EMC), told Izvestia the main myths about breast cancer. According to the expert, the most dangerous myth about breast cancer is the belief that if there are no symptoms or lumps, then everything is fine.
